U-M Ideas Lab Program

The U-M Ideas Lab culminates in a BSI-funded, three-day workshop event that gathers 20-25 selected experts from various disciplines to come together to pursue and develop a wide array of potential solutions to a broad challenge posed by BSI.

Each Ideas Lab centers around a new research challenge. A team of mentors works with the participants as they develop a plan and collaborate on solutions to that challenge. Participants pursuing similar key ideas are grouped together during the workshop. The workshop is intensive, interactive and creates a space for cutting-edge ideas to rise to the top.

A BSI selection committee involved with the Ideas Lab will choose the workshop participants, many of whom will receive funding to pursue their ideas developed throughout the workshop. All participants attending an Ideas Lab workshop could potentially receive funding as collaborators in the resulting projects. This program is based on the National Science Foundation Ideas Lab model and focuses on identifying key opportunities and forming interdisciplinary teams.
