U-M Ideas Lab Program
The U-M Ideas Lab is based on the National Science Foundation Ideas Lab model and focuses on identifying key opportunities and forming interdisciplinary teams.
Each Ideas Lab centers around a new research challenge. A team of mentors works with the participants as they develop a plan and collaborate on solutions to that challenge.
The Ideas Lab culminates in a BSI-funded, three-day workshop event that brings together 20 to 25 selected experts from various disciplines to pursue and develop a wide array of potential solutions to a broad challenge posed by the BSI. Participants pursuing similar key ideas are grouped together during the workshop. The workshop is intensive, interactive and creates a space for cutting-edge ideas to rise to the top.
A BSI selection committee involved with the Ideas Lab selects the workshop participants, many of whom will receive funding to pursue their ideas developed throughout the workshop. All participants attending an Ideas Lab workshop could potentially receive funding as collaborators in the resulting projects.
